Mental Health within HIV Guidelines webinar launches

The webinar Mental Health within HIV Guidelines is organised by EATG to explore issues related to updating existing standards of mental health care for people living with HIV in Europe and Central Asia.

The webinar will take place on 9 November at 17:00 CET.

The webinar is open to professionals involved in the development and updating of HIV care guidelines on mental health for people living with HIV, health professionals and community health workers, community health workers, representatives of communities working in the field, pharmaceutical company representatives, researchers, and people living with HIV with experience in this area.

Updated standards around mental health for people living with HIV may be more comprehensive and include both serious and more common conditions, the impact of ageing, stigma, clinical and community referral protocols, issues specific to adolescents, competencies of all professionals, whether health professionals or community/peer health workers, etc.

As the organisers highlight, the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) has been working specifically on different aspects of HIV and mental health for the past few years. Several webinars on this topic earlier this year identified the need for updated guidelines for HIV care in Europe and Central Asia that include more detailed information on mental health. For example, participants in previous webinars noted that relevant services and professionals use outdated protocols or criteria for mental health diagnosis, for example, treating transgenderism as a mental disorder; are unaware of the complexities of living with HIV; and use outdated stigmatising approaches when providing mental health care to people living with HIV.

Simultaneous translation into English and Russian will be provided.
