The Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) region is falling behind in its efforts to meet the targets to end AIDS by 2030. Factors such as restrictive laws, criminalization, stigma, discrimination, and gender inequality significantly hinder access to healthcare. Additionally, political resistance, anti-rights trends, a shrinking civil space, and the profound impact of russia’s war in Ukraine have exacerbated existing health issues and introduced new barriers, akin to a new “Berlin Wall” being constructed before our eyes.
In response to these challenges, key regional networks: APH, ECOM, ITPC EECA, EHRA, EWNA, ENPUD, REG, EKPC, AFEW, HAC, EMRHP, Teenergizer, Virus OFF, UNAIDS EECA, and other civil society organizations, and national community leaders are coming together to showcase best practices, share successes and challenges, and call for coordinated actions with international, regional, and national partners to effectively address these new obstacles.
On 22-25 July, participants will highlight key issues such as:
- How to Ensure Access to HIV and Tuberculosis Treatment and Diagnostics: exploring innovative approaches and strategies to improve access to essential healthcare services.
- Responding to the Challenges of the HIV Epidemic in War Settings: addressing the unique challenges faced by regions affected by conflict and political instability.
- Decentralization of HIV-associated Services – Practices in the EECA Region: sharing successful models and practices for decentralizing healthcare services to enhance reach and effectiveness.
- Strength in Community Mobilization and Unity: emphasizing the power of community mobilization and advocacy in driving policy changes and fighting against criminalization and stigma.
