National STI/AIDS Control Programme has highlighted the surge in new HIV infections in Sri Lanka, especially among young people. On March 29, 2024 during a news briefing in Colombo, Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana, the Director of the Programme, stressed that sexually active adults between the ages of 20 and 30 are particularly susceptible to this increase. According to the Health Promotion Bureau, the situation is worsening every year.
The increasing number of cases highlights the critical need for the introduction of prevention measures, public awareness, and initiatives to reduce HIV transmission and promote the well-being of young people in Sri Lanka.
The Programme is urging a collaborative effort from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the general public in order to address this health crisis.
The objective is to cultivate a nurturing atmosphere that not only advances consciousness but also eradicates the social disapproval linked to HIV testing and treatment. A reduction in the prevalence of HIV infection among the youth of the country will be achieved by acknowledging the seriousness of the situation and taking decisive action.
